CRANSTON -- A local man was arrested Thursday night on a bookmaking
charge, after police officers executing a warrant at his home found him
taking bets on the NCAA basketball tournament, the state police said.
Richard Almonte, 61, of 19 Doylston Dr., appeared before a bail
commissioner that night and was released on personal recognizance.
The officers executed the warrant in the course of a joint state and
Providence police investigation. When they entered the house, "he was
in the act of receiving a wager," said state police Lt. LeRoy Rose.
The police said they seized records of illegal gambling, $6,846 in cash and a cell phone.
