Online casino operator GoldenPalace has paid US$650,000 for the right
to name a newly discovered species of monkey, which will be known
forever as the Goldenpalace.com monkey.
GoldenPalace outbid all other candidates and will hope to recoup some
of the stunning US$650,000 final bid price in media coverage over the
next few weeks.
The formal scientific name for the new species will be Callicebus
aureipalatii, but its common name will be recorded for posterity as
Goldenpalace.com.
“This species will bear our name for as long as it exists,” Richard Rowe, chief executive of GoldenPalace.com, said.
“Hundreds, even thousands of years from now, the GoldenPalace.com Monkey will live to carry our name through the ages.”
The monkey was discovered in western Bolivia's Madidi National Park by Dr Robert Wallace of the Wildlife Conservation Society.
He put the naming rights up for a charity auction, and the funds raised
will go towards maintaining the Madidi National Park in Bolivia.
“The money will pay for seven park guards forever," said Adam Felton, one of the team who helped find the monkey, said.
The GoldenPalace.com monkey will follow other vanity names such as the Roosevelt Elk.
