PROVIDENCE, R.I. --A grand jury has indicted 30 people for racketeering and other crimes following investigations into two sports betting rings allegedly sanctioned by organized crime.The first ring, broken up in January, generated more than $3 million a month in bets, according to the Attorney General's office. Police monitored the betting using court-approved wiretaps before arresting the defendants, prosecutors said.Investigators have identified the 41-year-old ringleaders as Raymond "Scarface" Jenkins of Providence and Richard Angell of North Providence.Jenkins has an unlisted phone number and could not be reached for comment. Angell's lawyer declined to comment.The defendants will be arraigned in Providence County Superior Court on May 10.The grand jury also indicted members of a second gambling ring that prosecutors said operated in 2004 and 2005. State Police identified the ring leader as Joseph Achille, 70, a purported leader in the Patriarca crime family.The accused ring members are scheduled to be arraigned on May 3.Achille referred all questions to his lawyer, John Cicilline, who didn't immediately return a call seeking comment.
