Oddjack, the Gawker Media Web site devoted to exploring "the future of gambling," is folding its hand and joining the great blog in the sky. Citing lackluster readership, Gawker blog tycoon Nick Denton, announced earlier this week that Oddjack would shut down by the end of November.
Oddjack is the first Gawker-owned site that Denton has euthanized since he launched the company in 2002. He declined to comment beyond a statement posted on his personal Web site.
Denton praised Oddjack`s editor A.J. Daulerio, but said, "the audience was never there." During September, its peak month, Oddjack attracted 180,000 visits, compared to Denton`s flagship blog, Gawker, which attracted 4.6 million visits.
"The moral of the story," Denton concluded, is that "it`s easy to launch sites; much harder to make them popular."
