Vibrator Bandit Sentenced After Raid
A Leicester robber who held up a bookmaker’s shop using a vibrator disguised to look like a gun was sentenced to five years on Monday. Nicki Jex, 27, hid the sex toy in a plastic bag and robbed the Landbrokes bookmaking office of more than 600 pounds on December 27, 2006. The robbery was captured by CCTV inside the shop.
Jex initially denied any involvement, but that changed when confronted with the Crown’s star witness, Wayne Vakani, the last customer in the shop who kept a close watch on Mr. Jex after he had left the store. Mr. Vakani followed the robber and later recovered the hat, and a usable DNA sample, Mr. Jex wore during the crime. For his “considerable courage” the judge awarded Mr. Vakani 500 pounds.
Mr. Jex’s attorney, Phil Gibbs, told the court that the engineer had a “fragile” state of mind during the robbery and was high on drugs, telling the court: “One can be thankful that the item he had wasn’t a firearm.”
