Puerto Rico prosecutors seek to block lawyer in case of slain Canadian exec
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) - Prosecutors sought Tuesday to disqualify
the defence lawyer for a man accused of killing a multimillionaire
Canadian executive who was attacked in the tourist district of the
Puerto Rican capital.
The prosecutors argued in court papers that Jorge Gordon Menendez
should be disqualified from the case because he has also represented
the wife and sister-in-law of the executive, Adam Anhang.
A preliminary hearing for Jonathan Roman Rivera, who was charged with
murder for the Sept. 23, 2005, slaying of Anhang, had been scheduled
for Tuesday. But it was postponed to give the defence time to respond
to the prosecution's request.
A hearing on whether to disqualify the lawyer was set for March 3.
Roman has denied killing Anhang, who was beaten and stabbed to death as
he walked with his wife along the cobblestone streets of Old San Juan.
Roman had worked as a dishwasher at Pink Skirt, a bar and restaurant
owned by Anhang's wife, Aurea Vazquez. She was wounded in the attack.
Anhang, 32, had moved to Puerto Rico from Winnipeg in 2004. He was
chief executive officer of CWC Gaming, an online gambling and software
company based in San Jose, Costa Rica.
Roman is free on 200,000 US bail.
